Kathmandu is the capital of Nepal. It is lies in a hilly region at 4344 feet above the sea level. It was founded in 723 by Gunakamadeva. The present name comes from Kasthamandap which refer to a wooden temple said to a have been built from the wood of a single tree. In 1970s, the construction of new roads and the expansion of air travel were centred upon Kathmandu, making it the hub of the national transportion system. Kathmandu`s present day streets contrast strongly to the older sector of narrow street and brick house with carved doors and window. Destruction caused by an earthquake in 1934 CE resulted in the construction of many modern style buildings.
